Why I’ve Started a Substack
After 30 years of public service, including my tenure in Congress, I find myself at a crossroads—looking back on a career of advocating, legislating, and connecting with constituents and communities, and looking ahead to what comes next. As I step into this new chapter, I’ve decided to start a Substack.
Here’s why:
A New Kind of Public Service
Public service has always been about engaging with people, sharing ideas, and working toward solutions. While I’m no longer in Congress, my commitment to these principles remains. Substack provides a space for me to continue this dialogue, unfiltered and direct. Here, I can share my opinions, insights, and hopes for the future without the noise of spin or the media.
The Freedom to Write
Over the years, I’ve written countless speeches, op-eds, letters and legislative drafts. Yet, this platform offers something different: the freedom to explore topics at my own pace, in my own voice. Whether it’s sharing lessons learned from my years in public service, diving into policy ideas, or reflecting on the personal side of leadership, Substack is my blank slate.
Building a Community
Politics at its best is about connection. My hope is that this Substack becomes a gathering place for thoughtful discussion. I’ll be writing for those who are curious, engaged, and eager to look beyond the headlines. And I’ll be listening, too—your feedback, questions, and ideas will shape this journey.
What’s Next
As I step away from public office, I’m excited to embrace this new form of communication. I’ll be sharing stories from my career, analyzing current events, and exploring ideas for the future. If you’ve valued my voice in public service, I hope you’ll find value here as well.
Thank you for joining me.
